Smoothie Ingredient Guide: Sweeteners

Generally, smoothies are sweetened with natural sugar from fruits such as banana, mango, and pineapple but some smoothies may benefit from additional sweeteners.

Aim to sweeten your smoothie naturally through the ingredients first, and only add additional sweeteners if needed. Avoid artificial sweeteners, sugar, high fructose corn syrup altogether and go with natural alternatives.

Below is a list of sweeteners for smoothies with their nutritional information.

Agave (Not recommended) - Too high in fructose

Dates

Dried fruit

Honey - Use raw honey, not processed.

Maple syrup - Use 100% pure maple syrup, not the fake stuff. Check the ingredients.

Monk fruit - Zero calorie, healthier sugar alternative.

Stevia - Zero calorie, healthier sugar alternative. A little chalky tasting for my liking but some people like it.

Sugar (Not recommended) - Use other sweeteners or more fruit
